Far Cry Primal transports players to the Stone Age, specifically 10,000 BCE during the end of the Upper Paleolithic and beginning of the Mesolithic period in Central Europe. The game centers on Takkar, a skilled hunter and the last surviving member of his Wenja tribe, who finds himself stranded in the harsh, untamed land of Oros.
The core of the game involves Takkar's journey to reunite and lead the scattered Wenja people. To do this, he must survive in a world teeming with dangerous megafauna like woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers, as well as hostile rival tribes: the cannibalistic Udam from the frozen north, led by the hulking Ull, and the more advanced, agrarian Izila from the marshlands, who practice human sacrifice under their leader Batari.
Gameplay in Far Cry Primal focuses on survival and tribal warfare. Players craft weapons and tools from natural resources like wood, stone, and animal bones, as there are no modern firearms. A key feature is the "Beast Master" ability, allowing Takkar to tame various wild animals, including wolves, bears, and even saber-toothed tigers, and use them as companions in combat, for scouting, or even as mounts. The open world of Oros is dynamic, with a day/night cycle that affects gameplay as nocturnal predators emerge. Players conquer enemy outposts, gather resources, and build up their village to strengthen the Wenja tribe.
